September 8, 2023 marked a milestone for Springfield's The Block Party: for the first time in modern history, Main Street fully closed to traffic for pedestrians, giving thousands of neighbors the run of Historic Downtown Springfield from Pioneer Parkway East to 5th Street. What followed was five hours of organized beautiful chaos — and Kelly Lyon was there to capture it.
Roving mariachi and marching bands wound through the crowd while street performers from Healthy Moves and Pegasus Playhouse turned the sidewalks into stages. Food trucks like Tucky's Southern Eats kept people fed, while beverage carts from The Pedaler, Iris Vineyards, and Plank Town Brewing kept the good times flowing. Artisan vendors lined the blocks, downtown businesses threw open their doors, and the Springfield City Hall Plaza welcomed Herencia Hispana '23 by Communidad y Herencia Cultural as part of the evening's Second Friday Art Walk. Kelly's lens caught what makes The Block Party hard to explain and impossible to forget — kids with cotton candy, neighbors dancing in the street, strangers becoming friends somewhere between the shaved ice stand and the face painting booth. It's a free, family-friendly night that belongs entirely to Springfield.
