What was the Springfield Block Party?

Kelly Lyon Photography

Five years in, The Block Party had found its stride — seven city blocks, over 105 participating organizations, more music, more food, more of everything. Bayne Gardner painted a live community mural on the back wall of the Emerald Art Center, the Grey Matter Jugglers tossed dazzled in the street, and Herencia Hispana '24 filled the Library Plaza while a beverage garden, axe throwing, and inflatables kept every corner of downtown busy until 9 pm. Springfield had figured out what this night was supposed to feel like — and it showed. SpringfieldbottomlineSpringfieldbottomline

Kelly Lyon has been capturing The Block Party long enough to know how to showcase One Magical Night. Her 2024 gallery finds it in the quiet portraits and the crowded intersections alike — the back alley punk band, the mother and daughter with face paint, the joyful families gathered in their streets. These are the images of a city that knows how to celebrate together.
